Kyle Shane- Kyle is fresh from dropping out of MIT. He spent a good year there, absorbing some of the knowledge, but mostly cutting class to smoke a bowl and play video games in the hijacked dorm room of his perpetual bitch, Chad Jacoby. Kyle had been spending most of his days crushing people in online combat in COD and his nights going to frat parties and hooking up with easily manipulated girls. But something, as always, was missing. Kyle's darker impulses tugged at him as he brooded at night, and he never wanted to go to MIT because he actually wanted to graduate. It was more a stopgap measure, a game to test his art of manipulation as he used connections and money that wasn't his to buy his way into an Ivy League school just to prove he could. It was the ultimate game for him. But, like all games, Kyle got bored of it after a while, the halls of academia didn't appeal to him. Passing his days interacting with preppy socialites and stuffed shirts, and raucous frat boys with their boorish pursuits held no appeal to Kyle, and even rubbed the former trailer trash the wrong way. But, still, something in Kyle told him to keep looking. Perhaps it was the voice of his mother that pushed him to go to college in the first place, the one that lit the fires of his competitive spirit when she lovingly told her beautiful boy that he could be anything he wanted to be. Since she passed, Kyle has spent a lifetime running from game to game, as a distraction, but all the games and manipulation in the world can't satisfy the emptiness in his soul, or give him what he's looking for. Kyle wants to be known as the best, but he had never taken the time to ask, "the best at what?", before. Kyle can feel himself moving towards a change in his life, and he can't tell if this time, he wants to run away and play another game, or if for the first time he wants to step up and realize his true potential in a more positive way. His entire life seems to have been defined by the U2 lyric, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for,"... what happens when he finally finds it?
Array Vernon - the daughter of the dean of students at MIT, she just turned 17 years old. Kyle met her when she snuck into a frat party Kyle was hosting/providing "entertainment" to, and, at first, their meeting was nothing more than the product of a liberal dose of alcohol and a borrowed bedroom escapade. But the dean interrupting the party's aftermath and finding his daughter with the unruly Kyle forced him to take extreme actions against Kyle. Surprisingly, though, Array sided with Kyle, even though she knew he had just used her for sex. She would not let him throw her away like he had so many empty-headed blondes before. Kyle saw something in Array, a brutal honesty beyond her years and, perhaps, even a kindred spirit of sorts. But he does constantly regret bringing her into his life and, so deeply into his head. At first, Array thought that theirs was just a mutual need for control and domination, and manipulation, but it's grown into something more than that, with them. Throughout their adventures, a bond between Kyle and Array has grown, and he's even admitted he cares for her, which is a big first for Kyle. It remains to be seen if Kyle's baser impulses will bring out the wild girl in Array, or if Array can change him for the better.
Chad Jacoby - wimpy, nebbish, total pushover. When Kyle barged into the previously uncluttered dorm of Chad, Chad was the sort of single college student who would pass his four years unremarked, make mediocre grades and go on to a relatively unimportant job teaching middle school science or working at a family car dealership. In Kyle, however, Chad found someone to worship, to idolize. Taking part in Kyle's adventures brought Chad vicarious thrill, their drug induced trips on the couch of his apartment opened his eyes. And Chad looked up to Kyle, hung on his every word. So, in typical Kyle Shane fashion, Kyle tore his entire life to shreds with scathing, venomous words, mocking Chad for continuously following the leader, for riding the coattails of whatever idiot with a half-assed philosophy marched through the halls like a peon. Kyle left Chad broken and his illusions shattered, rather than keep up with another relationship. At first Chad was wounded, but he found a substitute in the form of Patrick... which led to a disturbing discovery of his new idol's murderous nature. Chad still follows along with whatever he's told to do, but events, like the temporal glitch that broke time, have shown that Chad does have a solid core underneath it all, and is a capable and intelligent scientist. Perhaps Kyle's pushing him away may have helped set Chad on the road to hardening him into the man he may need to be for the battles ahead, if he can resist being a foil for Kyle or, worse, a servant to the whims of the insane Patrick.
Patrick "Shane" - Patrick is the bastard son of Kyle Shane's father, Eric Shane, and a waitress at a local cocktail bar. Patrick and Kyle's father was famous for his escapades out on the surrounding areas, and for siring an unknown number of children. Patrick was the product of just one such union, and he was given away to foster homes at a young age. But, at some point, it's been implied that he met his biological father, and he followed him home to see the family life that existed between his father and the half-brother he never knew, Kyle. In Patrick's twisted mind, broken from being abandoned by his parents, his father did love him, he was just taken away. And Kyle Shane got a life, and a love, from his father that Patrick never got to experience. Patrick's mind clouded with jealousy against Kyle, who was given to Patrick's mind, the perfect life but he squandered it. Patrick has long plotted ways to kill, incapacitate or injure Kyle, because he feels Kyle was unworthy of his father's love, defined in his insane, maniacal way as the abuse Eric Shane laid on his son. Patrick is basically an abused, wounded boy who grew up into a psychotic, volatile stew of neuroses. He will stop at nothing to try and take the life he thinks should be his from his brother, one way or the other.
Eric Shane - A raging alcoholic who was unemployed for years, living off a pension, coming home to the little trailer shared by his wife and son with an open bottle in his hand and his long, tapered hands curled into a fist. Eric Shane was, at the start, as seen in flashbacks, a loving, doting husband, but something changed. Perhaps it was losing some, particular, important job. It's never really been seen from his point of view. What is known is that he tuned up on his wife Karen and his son Kyle many times in the past, at the drop of a hat. Kyle, as a young boy, bore the brunt of his father's wrath for being so unlike a man, for escaping into the realms of fantasy, for loving video games. Kyle would never forget the night his father smashed his Nintendo, and the vintage game of Battletoads (the first game he could never beat) to pieces in front of Kyle and beat him with a controller. Mother and son bore Eric's rages for years, and when his wife passed away, Eric's grief turned into intensified rage as he took it out on his son, for her dying. Things were tense, but they got to a breaking point as Kyle did something that left his father dead, before leaving the trailer park forever. Still, Eric lives on as a voice in Kyle's head, berating him, sneering at him for never being the man he wanted him to be.
Karen Shane - the light to Eric Shane's dark, the most important person of Kyle's life. The one woman who has achieved perfect, godlike status, and the most constant voice in his head, even if he tries to deny it for fear of her being ashamed of him. Karen loved her little boy, she encouraged him to always dream, to believe and to use his imagination. She encouraged him to play video games and let his mind wander, she encouraged him to never stop trying until he got to the level he wanted, and told him he could be anything he wanted to be. When his father was on a bender Karen more than once took the brunt of the abuse so that Eric wouldn't hit Kyle. Her selflessness and caring touched Kyle. But it couldn't last. She died of cancer when Kyle was just 12, leaving him alone. Part of Kyle wanted to weep for losing the woman who was his best friend and his protector, but part of him was just happy she was able to escape from his father... even though he felt numb that he was left alone. After his father passed away, Kyle went out into the world, manipulating his grade point average and financial situation. His mother wanted him to go to school and be an important figure in the world, so in tribute to her, he decided to do just that, by any means necessary... and he hoped, that one day, just not sure when, she would be proud of him.
Brody - Lately, when Kyle needs money, he doesn't have a large group of rich college kids to fleece for their savings in beer tournaments. So, using his connections, he found a dropout from MIT who was majoring in, of all things, botany. This brilliant student was cross-breeding amazing new strains of marijuana in the tanks there, and now is selling his product through grunts on the streets of Boston. High quality stuff. But Kyle approached him with a proposal to really move his weight out on the streets, using his greater string of connections in the academic, wrestling and even pro gaming worlds to spread their product out and make a lot of money. Brody is a typical urban stoner, long on knowledge about his precious herb but very short sighted. Kyle knows he's getting into dangerous territory with the types Brody runs with but figures he can outsmart them. The question is, who's using who here?
