Post War Games:
“I know it’s not how you wanted it to end but you should know how proud I am of you.”
Jamal’s voice starts our scene as we fade into the casino floor of The Velvet Rabbit Las Vegas to find Jamal and Edward strolling through the store fronts.
JAMAL- “You had a pretty big night. You retained the TV Title and you stood up to TFO.”
Edward scoffs.
EDWARD GRADO- “I walked into a trap, that’s what I did.”
JAMAL- “Listen the fact that you stood up and tried is more than anyone else in the building did. It could have been a lot worse for Team Devlin.”
EDWARD GRADO- “I appreciate you trying to make me feel better about it but I feel pretty stupid. I should have saw it coming but I didn’t.”
Edward comes to a stop outside of Chris Page’s Pot Shop. Edward enters the store causing some confusion with Jamal.
JAMAL- “You don’t smoke.”
Edward turns his head toward Jamal.
EDWARD GRADO- “Edibles are yummy.”
War Games has come and gone. It left a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to Chris Page and TFO, and while I’ve addressed that on the latest episode of Smash I’ve said what I said and now I’ve got to look forward to defending the Television Championship on my road to Summer Madness. Kimber Kenson is the next to try and lift the title off my shoulder. You’ve gotten past Nick Danger, and for that I’ll congratulate you because it’s not put you on track to step inside the ring with me. I’m not sure if you’ve been keeping up but I’m on the rise and I’m going to continue it on Monday Night Smash. I’ve made my career by defying the odds; beating J Mont, winning the TV Title, retaining it at War Games, interjecting myself into War Games, and all points in between has led me to this point. I’ve been the underdog since day one, and for the first time I think it’s safe to say that you have found yourself in my former shoes. Now that I’ve won and retained the title I welcome new challenges, I welcome new people, and I welcome you to try your hand. I said it on Smash that there is no guarantee that I make it to Summer Madness with the title… are you the one to take it from me?
Post Monday Night Smash
Edward left Monday Night Smash after making his statement. He sat in the back of an Uber while in transit to his hotel. His cell phone began to ring from inside his fanny pack. Edward retrived the phone and smiled seeing Jamal’s name and picture on his screen. Grado answers the call.
EDWARD GRADO- “Hey you!”
Jamal’s voice is heard.
JAMAL- “Hey yourself!”
EDWARD GRADO- “How did I do tonight?”
JAMAL- “I thought you came off well and you didn’t overstay your welcome like some.”
EDWARD GRADO- “Where are you?”
JAMAL- “It’s a surprise.”
Edward looks out the window of his Uber as it pulls up to his hotel where he sees Jamal.
EDWARD GRADO- “You sly dog!”
Edward hangs up the phone and exits the Uber where Jamal gives him a big hug.
JAMAL- “Surprise!”
Edward responds.
EDWARD GRADO- “A welcomed one at that! I’ve kinda missed you.”
Jamal releases his hug while sarcastically spouting out.
JAMAL- “Kinda?”
EDWARD GRADO- “I mean, I’m not going to blow your ego up to much.”
Jamal simply rolls his eyes before asking.
JAMAL- “Are you hungry?”
EDWARD GRADO- “STARVING!”
JAMAL- “Then lets go grab something to eat.”
Kimber, don’t get me wrong because I understand how it feels to want to make a big impact in a short period of time because win or lose for you the fact that you’re getting this opportunity so quick says the General Manager’s see something in you; but where things get a bit unfortunate for you is that I’m not here to be your doormat, and when you carry the Television Championship you are the work horse of the WGWF. It’s the only title that is defended more frequently than any other Championship in the company. I take pride in that. It took me a year to work my way into this position. It was a year filled of trial and error but it was the single biggest education I’ve gotten since I dawned the fanny pack. I’m going use my experience to lead me down the yellow brick road to victory and another successful title defense because I WANT to stand across the ring from Colossus come Summer Madness so that I can continue to be that spoiler with anyone that may think they are better than me.
It’s not personal between us, but anyone who steps to me for my Championship is a threat.
That includes you.
It’s just going to be the wrong place at the wrong time for you. I’ve got nothing but motivation at my fingertips considering the other avenues I have on my radar. I need to send a loud and clear message to Chris Page and TFO that the days of them doing whatever they want, whenever they want has just come to an end. The best way to do that, beat you.
JAMAL- “How are you feeling about your next title defense? Kimber might be pretty tough.”
Jamal as he places a credit card down on the table on a receipt that is turned upside down.
EDWARD GRADO- “Not going to lie when I say that I’m looking forward to someone different. The downside when you’re stuck working with the same person is you can get complacent. I need to have someone fresh and new to test my skills against. The WGWF is blowing up and the level of talent that are coming in makes me more passionate to be the beacon of hope that not everyone in the fed is an asshole.”
Edward giggles under his breath.
EDWARD GRADO- “I want to be one of the Champions that has an open door policy because it’s the only way to keep improving my own game. If I’m going to step up to the likes of Chris Page or J Mont then I need all the reps I can get against as many different opponents and styles as possible. Kimber is going to be a great test because I haven’t been in the ring with her before and all I have to go on is her match against Danger.”
JAMAL- “You don’t need to prove yourself to call out Page or Mont because you’ve proven yourself by stepping up to the plate, but I can understand wanting to be the flag berrier of the WGWF when it comes to defending you Title.”
EDWARD GRADO- “I’m just glad you did get run off with Seth picking at you at War Games.”
JAMAL- “Please, it’s going to take more than some reject to ruffle my feathers. Plus I like you, and I think we have something good going on here with us. You’re fun to be around and always have me laughing.”
EDWARD GRADO- “I enjoy having you around. I never thought someone like you would be interested in someone like me.”
JAMAL- “What’s not to like? You’re funny, handsome, and a good guy. They don’t make them like you anymore.”
Edward starts to blush.
JAMAL- “It’s true.”
I’m looking forward for Colossus being front and center for this defense because I want him to get an up close and personal view of exactly what I’m capable of. He might be a big, overgrown goof but surely he isn’t as stupid as he looks. You can see first hand what’s coming for you at Summer Madness. I’m not complacent with my positioning and I’m going to change it with one victory at a time. I’ve done the impossible and now I will continue to move the needle with the TV Title securely around my waist. Big man, scout up as much as you why you can because that countdown to Summer Mandess is in full swing. Watch as Kimber and I do this division proud with a highly athletic battle; I mean, I don’t think you know athletic more than you know a plate of cheeseburgers.
Kimber, this is our moment.
It’s your opportunity to showcase what you have. For your sake I hope that you didn’t get thrown into the deep end of the pool to quick because while you has aspirations of leaving Monday Night Smash with the WGWF Television Championship but the most you can expect is leaving knowing that you gave it your all, left it all in the ring, but just came up a little short. We are in the midst of my rise to prominence within the WGWF, and you are just another footnote on that path.
EDWARD GRADO- “Will you be in Oklahoma?”
We open up present day to find Edward and Jamal laying side by side in bed under the covers.
JAMAL- “Of course! I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
Edward’s cell phone starts to ring as it lays on the nightstand. Edward rolls over picking up the phone and looking at the Caller I.D. seeing the name of Sam Chatman with Sam’s picture on the screen. Edward sits up quickly and retrieves his phone and hits decline. Jamal takes notice of Edward’s mannerisms as he asks.
JAMAL- “Is everything alright?”
Edward glances over at Jamal.
EDWARD GRADO- “Everything’s fine. That was a blast from the past.”
JAMAL- “Anything I should be worried about?”
EDWARD GRADO- “A platonic blast from the past, and no you have nothing to worry about.”
Edward slides his phone back on his nightstand.
JAMAL- “I hope not.”
… TO BE CONTINUED
The bottom line on Smash comes down to who wants it more. I’ve expressed what it means to me to even be in this position. I never saw it coming in a million years but now that I’m here I’m not turning back. Kimber, I respect you but I don’t envy your position in the role as challenger. You have an uphill battle but only one of us is going to prevail. That person is me, and I’m not sorry about it.
