Cause hard times they come and they go
Most of the time they're in the middle of the road
It's the same pain in different ways
Don't your know, Son, when it pours it rains
"Baby, we'll figure something out, we always have. Ya know the Lord won't put more on us than we can handle with him by our side". The words escape Mad Dog's lips as he tries to console his wife, Heather. Mad Dog and his normally feisty redheaded wife sit at their kitchen table, and like many people around the world over the past few years are wondering how they are going to pay their bills this month.
With tears in her eyes she says, "This isn't like any other time Mark, the world isn't the same, I'm laid off, groceries cost more than ever, and there’s no relief in sight.".
On the table is a laptop opened to a banking website that reveals a balance with no commas in it. It's better than the balance that had a negative beside it before Mad Dog got his Coliseum pay with the win bonus attached. Beside the computer are various bills, several say “second notice” on them and a couple even say “final notice”. Mad Dog is tired of living hand to mouth and tired of stressing over financials, but even worse is seeing his wife worry.
Mad Dog hates seeing his wife worry, especially over money. He was raised old-school, where the man is the breadwinner and it is his responsibility to provide for the family. Mad Dog takes his wife’s hands into his, as their arms rest on the table, and he looks into her beautiful green eyes. “Baby, I’m gonna win at War Game, hit the pay window, and carry that momentum onto Smash. After that, I’ll be moven up the card, gonna get that X-Divsison belt, and start getting bigger paydays.”.
Heather smiles at her loving husband but still holds back tears. Both she and Mad Dog had grown up poor, and she had sworn to herself that her kids would never have to go through the struggles she did growing up. She has faith in her husband, and he has never let her down. Mad Dog has always kept his word and done everything he can to provide for the family, but things are different this time. The world is different and it will never be the same.
Mad Dog can see the uncertainty in Heather's eyes. This uncertainty hurts him, it strikes him to his core and he feels it in his soul. He knows his wife means nothing bad by it, but it hurts his foolish pride. He grips her hands tighter, reaffirming his seriousness but also giving her a sense of security. “I can fire up the still and run a few gallons, you know old white lightning is recession-proof”, Mad Dog says.
“Mark, no”, Heather says as she pulls her hands away. “We have too much to risk for you to get caught shinning. Just… ju…”. Her words trail off as she falls silent and slumps back in her chair.
Mad Dog leans forward, sitting even more at attention, concerned about his wife’s state. “Baby, what is it?” he asks.
“Nothing, I shouldn’t have even thought it” she replies.

“Nothing, I shouldn’t have even thought it” she replies.
This only strengthens his curiosity, as he says “baby, just say it, I’m a big boy, I can take whatever it is”.
Heather's arms unfold from her body, her somber demeanor changes to one of fire, not of anger, but determination. She leans forward and with a serious look in her eyes and tone in her voice says, “Just make sure you win, not just this match, but you go on and you win every match they put you in baby, and then you take that championship from whoever has the damn thing when you get there. We took a leap of faith when you quit the mines and went back to wrestling full-time, so you better make this work because this is your last shot at making your dream your career. Now, baby, I love you and I’ll always stand by you, but you gotta make this work.”.
Mad Dog leans forward and places his hand on Heather's, he looks her in the eyes matching her intensity and passion as he says, “baby, you know I’m going to give every last drop of blood, sweat, and beers I got to make this thing work”.
Heather smiles and says, “I think you mean blood, sweat, and tears baby”.
Mad Dog smiles and says, “na baby, beers, I’m not crying like some little b*tch”.
Heather cracks a smile and laughs a little bit, saying “You’re such an idiot”.
Mad Dog smiles back at her and says, “Yeah, but I’m your idiot”.
The two of them smile at each other and then both lean across the table and embrace in a kiss.
“THWACK!”
The sound of an ax smashing through a piece of wood is heard as we fade in to see Mad Dog swinging an ax into a block of wood. His tank top is drenched with sweat as the humidity of the Appalachian Mountains drains the water from his body. Mad Dog sits a piece of wood on the big block made out of a stump, and then lifts the ax overhead and brings it down with a hard swing, slicing the piece of wood.
Mad Dog puts the ax down, leaning against it holding himself up with one hand, while he pulls a handkerchief from his back pocket with the other hand and begins wiping the sweat off of his face. The voice of Sunny Jim cuts in saying, “JESUS IT’S HUMID OUT HERE!”.
Mad Dog looks over his shoulder and sees Sunny, who looks like he just got off the golf course walking into his backyard.
“You wanna take a few licks?” Mad Dog asks as he turns around to face Sunny.
Sunny chuckles and says, “Shoot no, that is too much work for me, I prefer to hire those jobs out”.

Mad Dog scoffs and shakes his head.
“Why are you out here breaking your back in this heat?” Sunny asks.
Mad Dog shakes his head in disbelief, and a bit in shock at how different his life is from Sunny’s, and then says “Well, it’s a heck of a workout, and I need to stack wood for the winter, but I ain’t got the money to hire the job out. Besides, what would my Daddyy or Grand Pappy say if they saw me hiring a guy to do a job I could do myself?”.
Sunny stops in the shade of a nearby tree, and puts his hands on his hips.
They’d probably disown you.
Yeah, no sh*t, but only after they put a boot to my ass.
Well, you won’t have time for stuff like this soon enough, you’re big star-bound.
Mad Dog sits another piece of wood on the block and splits it with a big swing of the ax. Mad Dog continues working but begins speaking while doing so.
Ya know what old David Allen Coe said, if you're big star bound, it’s a long hard ride. Well, I guess I am big star bound, cause my whole career, shoot, my whole dang life has been a long hard ride. I’ve known nothing but hard work my entire life, and I have spent all of my formative years busting my butt because I have always been taught that hard work makes dreams come true. And baby, you best believe old Mad Dog has got big dreams, and I sure know how to work hard to make um come true.
Mad Dog sinks the ax blade into the wooden block and deeply breathes.
Boys, it’s time for this dog to be let off da chain and enter da yard known as da WGWF. All three of y’all done made your debuts, and old Nick Danger has done debuted twice. But Nicky, ya only get one chance to make a first impression, and your first impression was pretty dang disappointing. You think you can go away for a few months, come back and just make a fresh start for yaself? You thought everyone would forget about your first run because you were pretty forgettable.
Nick old boy, after our match, you gonna be like your career, forgetful. Ya get forgetful when ya got brain damage, and I tell ya what, you gonna have some brain damage when I drop this cinderblock hards head of mine on ya from that top rope and make ya go mad.
“I do declare son”, Sunny says from the shade as he steps forward.
I hope Nicky doesn’t feel bad, he isn’t the only has-been, never-was that is in this match. There is also David “Morbid Wolf” Francis. Morbid Wold, I’m assuming that is your furry name. I’m also assuming that Johnny Barrows was scraping the bottom of the barrel when looking for someone to put in this match with Mad Dog and Ezra. Sure, old Wolfie is on a two-win streak, but that’s about as impressive as the streaks in your underoos.
Wolfie beat some perennial losers, and won his two matches by the skin of his teeth. So, what is Wolfie going to do when Mad Dog knocks his teeth down his throat? Well, there is two things you can do about it Wolfie, actually one, NOTHING!
Nicky and Wolfie don’t deserve shots at the X-Divison championship ship, because they’d just choke if they got it.
Good thing we don’t have to worry about that Sunny Baby. This match is mine for the winning. I know old Ezra King nonthinking he the won this match is meant for. Ezra probably fool hearted enough, and wet enough behind the ears to think this match is his ticket to the X-Division championship. But it ain’t ya time Ezra, it’s the dog days of summer, and old Mad Dog is turning that heat up at War Games.
You got a bright future Ezra, and you got a good mentor in Cholo, but you ain’t ready yet. Your future is bright, but it’s getting out shined by the glimmer of gold in my eyes.
You know people aren’t expecting you to win, this being your debut and all.
Let um doubt me Sunny Baby. The haters, the odds makers, and maybe even my opponents wont see me coming, but they dang sure gonna know I’m there when this Mad Dog sinks his teeth and his boot into their backsides. This is how Mad Dog puts food on the table, how Mad Dog is going to make a better life for his family, and how I’m getten my family up out the hollow.
This might be my first rodeo here in WGWF, but it dang sure ain’t my first rodeo in the wrestling world. Come War Games I ain’t holding my horses, and I ain’t holding back nuthen. You boys, well, Ezra’s a boy, David older than me, and Nick, well he like an old lady, don’t want anyone to know his age. It don’t much matter to me none how old y’all are. I done spent my whole life in and around this sport, I done held gold in some big places, but now it’s time for Mad Dog to show the Worlds Greatest Wrestling Federation, that I am one of the worlds greatest, and soon to be the greatest X-Divison the world done ever seen .
Y’all might be doubten the old dog, ya might not have even heard of me before, but after War Games ya never going to forget the name Mad Dog Mark Wright. Future X-Divison champion, this match my firs step to going for the gold, and the first match fo Ezra, Francis, and Nick to GO MAD!!!
