The street lamp shines brightly down on the black ‘67 Chevy Impala as it sits parked at the front end of the bridge… Well, more of a walkway really. The sign just behind them and to the left reads “YOU ARE NOW ENTERING HELL FOR CERTAIN, POPULATION 350”. The wind rustles the leaves in the trees gently, above the car as we peer inside.
Devlin Knight is sat in the driver's seat looking down, forlorn and just generally distracted as he smokes on a spliff, whilst in the passenger seat, sits Maxwell Mason Stone, chewing on a toothpick and using another to dig under his fingernails…
Devlin Knight is sat in the driver's seat looking down, forlorn and just generally distracted as he smokes on a spliff, whilst in the passenger seat, sits Maxwell Mason Stone, chewing on a toothpick and using another to dig under his fingernails…
Devlin: ”Twice… Two times… Two times on the bounce now, I've lost… Dos, Deuces. Two matches with what now turns out to be members of TFO and I've been sent home packing on both occasions…”
MMS: ”These battles may have been lost but the true war has yet to come.”
Devlin: ”I hear that… It doesn't take away from the fact that I lost though. Apparently I was supposed to lose the belt to J Mont but even that doesn't make me feel better…”
MMS: ”Interesting how things like that work out. Maybe it's gotta be that way because you gotta take it back from him en route to putting a stop to all their bullshit. The time for this guy to run around unchecked is coming to an end.”
Devlin: ”I’m telling you brother, WarGames can't come soon enough… But before then…”
The sound of wings snapping the night time air echoes above the car and both men look under and out from the windshield of the Impala, watching as a bird of some description soars off into the distance…
Devlin: ”We've got a few other little bits to deal with, starting with another tag match…”
MMS: ”With our luck Goth and Chaos will join the Fortunates too. I should have been prepared for that little wrinkle last week. Shame on me. I guess we'll just have to go into this assuming the worst can happen and bring the same fire we will bring at War Games. I gotta assume if anyone in this place hasn't declared their alignments then they're part of the problem. ”
Devlin: ”One hundred percent… And honestly? I don't think anyone was prepared for Myst to join TFO, I'd have imagined her becoming part of Clowns ‘R’ Us before J Mont’s little groupie gang… But Chaos and Goth aren't infallible, we know that.”
MMS: ”Joe has a way of convincing people. I've seen him get his claws in those you'd think would know better.”
Devlin: ”Eh… I once drank the Kool Aid he was selling…”
MMS: ”Do you think we got a shot of ending this once and for all?”
Devlin: ”J Mont and TFO? I think it's very possible, very doable… WarGames can't come soon enough I know that much…”
Max stares out the window before taking off his seat belt and exiting the car. Devlin makes his exit as well.
MMS: ”So what can you tell me about this Chaos and Goth? What's your take on these guys and what do we gotta do to leave with a W?”
Devlin puts his hand gently into the left hand pocket of his jacket and eases out a spliff which he places between his teeth, grabbing a lighter from the dash and sparking it before taking the first draw and closing the driver's side door, the two men walk to the trunk…
Devlin: ”Well Chaos is big and he’s brutal, not one to be messed with… I've taken him on previously in a three way dance which I won, but I'm sure he will gleefully tell you how it wasn't him I pinned, but some Witch named Enchantress. He was very well known in XWF though, holding several belts including the Tag-Titles alongside Gabe Reno in the team Iconoclast… Us and them? They would have been some amazing matches.”
Devlin pops the trunk as he takes another draw on the spliff. Max looks inside the trunk and his eyes widen… He looks up at Devlin who shrugs as Max chuckles and shakes his head. Devlin pulls out a couple of weapons and hands one to Max, before closing the trunk again.
Devlin: ”And then we've got Goth… Who, I'll be honest I don't know a whole lot about despite being here quite a while and having him just kind of… Pop up now and then. I think Lexi Gold had a thing with him at some stage… Wasn't pleasant.”
MMS: ”... you see that?”
Devlin: ”What?”
MMS: ”That light in the distance. I swear, it’s flashing.”
Devlin: ”That’s our signal. Let’s go.”
Devlin locks the car and they set off on foot over the bridge leading towards what looks to be some kind of a decrepit factory off in the distance.
MMS: ”What the hell is this place and why are we here?”
Devlin: ”This guy got a hold of me saying there's something that you and I both need to see here.”
MMS: ”And that is?”
Devlin: ”I'm not sure. That's why we're bringing guns.”
As they get closer to the seemingly abandoned brick building, a door opens up and a shadowy figure steps out. He calls out to Devlin and Max and they both slowly approach the building with caution.
Devlin: ”Are you Craig?”
The man steps closer to Devlin and Max, enough to make out the details in his face under the light of the moon.
Craig: ”Hey, you guys actually showed up!”
Devlin: ”We came a long way to see what you've claimed is of great importance to us…”
MMS: ”Let's get this moving along. Why are we here? And what's the deal with the light signal?”
Craig laughs but Devlin and Max don't look amused. He realises he should get on with this.
Craig: ”Spooky unexplainable shit happens in this building. You see, I bought this place last month and I'm starting to see why I got it for the low price of 75 bucks. We should just go in and I'll show you what I mean.”
Craig reaches into his utility belt and removes two flashlights and hands one to each wrestler. He motions for them to follow him into the building and they oblige. They navigate through the darkness of the factory illuminated only by their flashlights and the bright moon peeking through the holes in the ceiling.
Craig: ”The guy who sold it to me wouldn't tell me much about it. I tried looking online and even went to the town clerk to see if there were any historical records on the place but it's almost like it never existed. The only thing I know is that it once belonged to some company called “Fortune” and it must have been a long, long time ago.”
Max and Devlin look at one another…
MMS: ”Fortune?”
Craig: ”Can't find anything about ‘em. I looked through phone books and newspapers going back to at least the 30s and not a single blip on the radar. Let's hang a right here.”
Craig goes through an open door into an office area. The entire room is covered in various types of aged stained papers. Craig picks one up off the floor.
Craig: ”Have a look!”
Devlin and Max look at each other cautiously. Max picks up a sheet of paper from the ground.
MMS: ”The hell is this?”
Max shows the sheet of paper to Devlin and it looks to be a WANTED poster from a bygone era with a photograph of himself.
Craig: ”There are thousands of these in here.”
Devlin picks one up off the ground and examines it with the flashlight.
Devlin: “Protect Your Future! Report any sightings of Devlin Knight to the Fortune Tip Line immediately!”
Craig: ”I recognized you two immediately from TV when I saw all these. I'm telling you, they're all throughout this building and if you look at the paper you can tell its OLD.”
MMS: ”This is weird for sure but why couldn't you have us come here in the daytime?”
Craig: ”Remember when I told you that spooky unexplainable shit happens here?”
Devlin and Max both nod.
Craig: ”I couldn't bring you here during the day because, well, this place doesn’t exist in the daytime…”
Max laughs dismissively.
MMS: Alright, what’s your game here? What’s the point of all this?
Max removes the pistol from his side and Craig starts yammering in a panic.
Craig: ”No game! I swear I’m telling the truth. This place isn’t of this world. I come here during the day and it’s just not here. I come in at night and there’s all these weird wanted posters and documents with your guys’ faces and names all over them. I contacted y'all because I thought you should know about this so don’t shoot the messenger!”
MMS: ”What’s your take on this, Dev?”
Devlin: “Fortune…”
MMS: “Do you think it…-”
Devlin: “Fortunate? Fortunate Ones?”
Devlin shines his light around the room and follows the light with his eyes. A calendar hanging on the wall catches his attention and he walks towards it.
Devlin: ”Did you put this calendar here?”
Craig: ”I haven’t put anything in here. This is all exactly the way I found it.”
Devlin pulls the calendar off the wall and shines his light on it for Max to see. Max ax takes the calendar from Devlin and puts his finger on the box representing Monday, June 3rd. A red smiley face stamp occupies it. Further down the calendar, another red smiley face stamp covers the box representing Sunday, June 30th.
Devlin: ”Anything interesting about those dates to you?”
MMS: ”The upcoming Brawl and War Games?”
Devlin: ”Precisely. I don’t know exactly what this is but I can’t help but feel this place is some kind of anomaly. A glitch that shouldn’t be here. Perhaps this is linked to the epochs that Foster was talking about.”
Max looks confused and gestures his arms outward but is still holding the pistol in his hand. Devlin and Craig both put their arms in front of their faces instinctively.
MMS: ”Sorry. Let’s take a time out here. All we've got here is an ugly ass old broken building, papers with our names and faces and a calendar with some dates and we're supposed to assume this has some cosmic significance?
Devlin: ”Brother, this is an ugly ass old broken building, in a town called Hell for Certain, Kentucky… No offence Craig.”
Craig: ”Oh, none taken…”
Devlin: ”These papers aren't just any old papers, I mean… These are wanted posters, found in an ugly ass old broken building MILES from where we'd usually be… And a calendar that just so happens to have dates booked when we're next wrestling?”
MMS: ”Are we sure that old Craig here isn't just some weird superfan constructing some insane scheme to meet his favorite wrestlers?”
Devlin: ”Shh…”
MMS: ”What?”
Devlin: ”Listen…”
Devlin holds a finger up. Faint voices can be heard. He points down the hallway and starts walking towards the sound.
Craig: ”And here's the next part of the tour…”
Craig and Max follow Devlin down the hallway with the voices getting louder as they progress.
“Well at least it it ain't him, eh?”
“Hell yeah! Anyone but him.”
At the end of the hallway sits an old television and on the set is a black and white scene set in a diner where two patrons are sitting in conversation.
Devlin: ”Man see that's what I'm talking about… Eh? Necessary Evil back on track before we head into WarGames and decimate J Mont and his groupies… I'm not gonna say the match wasn't difficult though, Goth and Chaos? No slouches there and despite knowing what we expected going in… A lot still took me by surprise…”
We cut back to Devlin, Max and Craig watching the monitor…
MMS: ”What the hell is this??”
Devlin: ”This is us, Max… This is us, somewhere discussing the match with Chris Chaos and Goth… Only… -”
MMS: ”Only the match hasn't taken place yet.”
Devlin: ”Well I was going to say this could mess with the space-time continuum, us seeing ourselves but yeah that too…”
MMS: ”So what is this? CGI? AI?”
Devlin: ”No man, this is… This is actually going to happen.”
MMS: ”Holy… Shit…”
The conversation has been continuing in the scene on the television set as the two are now drinking cups of coffee…
Devlin: ”I’ve always known Goth was a wild wolf, stepping up as a gamble from the Independents to the big leagues… Those guys are very rarely bad at their job and he's…-”
MMS: ”Vicious right?”
Devlin: ”Right man and Chaos is just that, he was chaos personified but the outcome is exactly what it should be and it brings us closer to the WarGames match but also brings us closer to the Tag belts.”
MMS: ”Funny how I came to the WGWF to help control a chaotic situation and I ended up controlling someone literally named Chaos. I gotta admit, he put up a good fight but after a misstep in our first match I feel pretty good about what we did. I honestly didn't know what to expect with Chaos and Goth. I thought it would either be easy pickings or we'd have to be extra conscious considering the climate around here. With two guys like that I didn't know if we were up against some angsty, isolated and rageful school shooter wannabe types or if we were going to be in the ring with professionals.”
The Devlin watching the screen balks and looks at Max.
Devlin: ”Dude… Did you really say that?!”
MMS: ”...Not yet?”
Devlin: ”Well I mean you're not far off the pace to be fair, with the amount I've thought about since facing him but…”
Devlin sucks in some air as Craig looks on, unsurprised as the duo watch the screen again…
MMS: ”A guy like Chaos must be seething. Under the house in his basement playing Doom or some shit cranking Marilyn Manson into his ears and shooting monsters pretending they're the guys who just beat him in the ring. Tearing his Lost Boys posters off the wall slamming his fists through the dry wall.”
Devlin: ”Hey, maybe his name should be Goth instead? But seriously what are the odds that the closer we’re getting to the tag titles as well as WarGames we appear to be thrown in against some Random Pandas? I don't think that match was a coincidence the more I think about it.”
MMS: ”We gotta keep one eye behind our back at all times. When people like us rise up, the queue of people wanting to knock us down gets bigger and bigger. We're going to create a new status quo in the WGWF when we finally silence the Fortunates and there's going to be a lot of folks who may not like the new reality that they suddenly find themselves living in.”
Suddenly Devlin looks around him before looking up at what's quite possibly a CCTV Camera, but it's what our twosome are watching through…
Devlin: “I hope this doesn't mess up you guys' heads now! You can't lose focus because there's so much more than wrestling matches going forward for you both!”
Suddenly men in black suits come into view and approach Devlin and Max at the table. They're speaking but no sound is coming out.
Devlin: ”What are they saying?”
Craig: ”I have no idea. This plays every single night.”
MMS: ”Dev, what do you make of this?”
Devlin: ”I..”
Devlin's thought is interrupted by the TV cutting to static. Suddenly the room begins to fill with a low humming noise that shakes the entire room. The papers scattered across the floor start to vibrate and disperse across the room.
Craig: ”And it always ends just like this."
The TV glows with a blinding white light. The three inhabitants of the room cover their eyes but all that can be seen is white. Devlin and Max uncover their eyes to realize they're once again in the car. Max immediately gets out of the car and looks towards the factory… but it is no longer there. Devlin lights another spliff and takes a drag.
Devlin: ”Something interesting is about to happen…”
FADE TO BLACK.
