(Ten years in the past)
Ruby looked around the outside of the gym and found the garbage cans, lifting the lids she rummaged for anything that could be edible. Spotting a sandwich that looked like it might still be good, Ruby tore the wrapper open and took a bite, and sighed. She had been on the run for close to a week. Her clothes were getting dirty and Ruby was aching from spending all that time in the dog kennel thanks to Travis. Ruby heard a noise behind her and whipped around to see a young blond guy a few years older than herself standing there looking at her.
“Hey, you! Get away from the garbage can.”
“Too late I already got what I was looking for.”
The blond-haired guy jumped down off the steps and came charging at her. Ruby ducked his swing and reached out to grab the guy by the arm and threw him away from her. As he got up and came at her a second time, Ruby grabbed the guy by the arm and pushed him into the side of the building, and wrenched his left arm behind his shoulder. By this point, some of the other wrestling students heard the commotion and came out to see what was going on. Jack stood back and watched with his arm around Daisy’s shoulders.
“Let go of me! She’s gonna break my arm!”
Finally, Jack stepped forward and his voice was clearly heard by all those present.
“Shawn! Knock it off! Miss if ya would be so kind as to let him go, I promise he won’t bother you again.”
Ruby’s eyes darted around the group of mostly guys as they gathered and she slowly backed away from the scene and reached for her backpack. Shawn swore under his breath at Ruby and glared at her.
“Go home Shawn, you’re done here for the day and quite possibly permanently. I really don’t appreciate your reaction to things. Is anger going to be your first reaction when you face your opponent? You’ll be done before the bell rings”
Jack turned his attention back to Ruby, she was obviously a scrapper but had not eaten in awhile.
“We were going to order pizza for lunch, you are welcome to join us if you would like to.”
As much as Ruby wanted to say yes to the offer from the girl with red hair she was scared.
“I don’t take charity…” Ruby replied as she slipped her backpack on over her shoulders.
“It’s not a charity offering, consider it an offer of friendship!.”
Daisy replied with a big smile as she walked down the steps and cautiously walked over to Ruby. Jack held his breath as he watched his daughter approach the stranger.
“Hi, I’m Daisy! What’s your name?”
Ruby looked at Daisy’s outstretched hand and thought for a long moment before she gave in to the pangs of hunger and shook the girl’s hand.
“I’m Ruby.”
She walked with Ruby up the stairs of the gym and Ruby looked up at Jack with wide eyes. She’d never seen someone so tall.
“This is my dad, Jack, he owns this gym,” Daisy said with a smile.
“Nice to meet you, Ruby, that was quite the hold you had on my student. Where did you learn to do that?”
“From watching wrestling tapes with my dad when I was young,” She replied quietly.
“Well, I must say that was highly impressive. I want to apologize on behalf of my student. You see, we’ve been having some trouble lately with homeless people setting our garbage cans on fire”
The students gathered in a circle and sat down as Jack headed into the office to order pizza and soda for everyone. He came back out and noticed that Ruby and Daisy were talking.
((I bet she’s a runaway…)) Jack thought to himself as he came out to join the kids.
When the pizzas and soda arrived, Ruby at three pieces no time flat and reached for a fourth one and a bottle of Pepsi.
“Pepsi is my favorite!” Daisy said to Ruby.
“Mine too…My dad used to give me sips of it when I was little,” Ruby replied with a straight face.
Ruby looked up to the office window where she could see Jack standing. Quickly she began to pick up her things and swiped a few more pieces of pizza before heading for the front door.
“Ruby, wait up!”
By the time Daisy got outside, she saw Ruby running away up the street.
(Present Day)
Daisy parked her car outside of Ruby’s home and got out and reached for her backpack. Ruby had invited her out to the house to go for a jog with Handsome up into the hills behind the house and spend the afternoon out there. Handsome was ready and rearing to go once he realized Daisy was here.
“Door’s open Daisy!”
Ruby was in the kitchen, loading up her backpack with two bottles of water, some kibble for Handsome, some trail mix for herself, and a sandwich. ((This should hold me over until we get back.)) Ruby thought to herself as she zipped up her backpack and carried it over to the front door. The girls hugged each other tightly and made sure they had everything and the three of them headed out.
“You ready Handsome?” Daisy asked with a big smile as she pet the top of his head.
“Are you back for good Daisy?”
Ruby asked as they headed along the well-worn path.
“I’m leaning that way. Dad said I can stay with him until I can find a place.”
“You’re more than welcome to stay here with me and Handsome if you’d like. I’ve got the spare room upstairs and then the room down in the basement.”
“Let me think about it, okay and I will let you know real soon.”
The girls reached a small stream and stopped there for a little while. Ruby took out her camera and took pictures of Handsome as he splashed around in the stream. Then she turned the camera over to Daisy who was stretched out on her back with her eyes closed.
“You better not be taking pictures of me.”
“Nope!”
“So I saw on the WGWF boards that you have an IC title match coming up. You must be excited.”
“Excited but nervous. It feels like everyone else I’ve faced up until now has just been showing up for a paycheck. Devlin Knight is a champion and a cut above the rest.”
Ruby had some of her water and half of her sandwich while Daisy took a bite of her peanut butter sandwich and a swig of water.
“I’m looking forward to watching this fight ringside,” Daisy said.
Handsome, who was all played out, curled up on the grass in between the two girls and fell asleep, and soon began to snore.
“You have no idea how much I have missed hanging out with you!”
Daisy said as she laid her head on Ruby’s shoulder.
“Oh, I do know, about the same amount as I have missed you.”
The girls spent a couple of hours near the stream and talking about Daisy’s trip overseas to Japan when it began to cloud over.
“Uhoh..We’d better pack up and head home, this could become a downpour!” Ruby said as she quickly put her things away into her backpack and woke up Handsome. The girls hurried back down through the hills but got caught in the sudden downpour and all three of them were completely soaked by the time they got back to the house.
“Ugh! My clothes are stuck to me like glue!”
Ruby exclaimed as the two of them headed upstairs. Ruby gave Daisy a change of clothes and she pulled out a pair of jogging pants and a t-shirt to change into. They both sat on the side of the bed and peeled their clothes off and then once they were dry, they slipped into their change of clothes. Ruby walked topless over to get her hairbrush and passed it to Daisy when she was done with it. Pulling her t-shirt over her head she waited for Daisy to finish getting dressed before they headed downstairs.
“Why don’t you stay for dinner tonight? Heck, spend the night out here.”
“Let me text dad and let him know so he does not worry.”
The girls headed back downstairs and Ruby turned on the heat. Ruby looked in the fridge and frowned.
“I swear I had more food than this, Handsome! Have you been sneaking into the fridge?”
Ruby asked him, his response was to woof and then roll over onto his back. The two of them went back and forth trying to decide on what they wanted to eat and finally decided upon The Keg. Both of them ended up getting the same thing, a steak medium well with a baked potato and a salad.
“That’ll take about forty-five minutes to an hour.”
“That’s totally fine, thank you!”
“Can I ask you something Ruby?”
“What is it, Daisy?”
Ruby asked as she joined her on the couch.
“Do you remember the first day we met?”
“Of course I do…I was terrified, I’d been on the streets for a week and I looked as bad as I felt.”
Daisy reached for a blanket over the back of the couch and draped it around the two of them. Daisy hesitated to ask Ruby what she wanted to so she chewed on the inside of her mouth.
“What’s wrong Daisy?”
“Why did you run away that first day?”
She pondered the question for several moments before she found the words she wanted to answer with.
“I was frightened Daisy, I was afraid Jack was going to call the cops to come and get me and bring me home.”
Ruby began to shake at the mention of home, Daisy wrapped her arms around her best friend’s shoulders and rested her head against Ruby’s.
“I’m sorry you didn’t feel safe with us.”
“I didn’t trust anyone at that point, I just knew that I had to keep moving so they couldn’t send me back. I would have rather died than go back to that place.,” She said with a shudder.
“I am glad you came back though, I had hoped you would.”
“That’s why I kept coming back and when your dad offered me a job at the gym helping you out…Well, color me surprised. Your dad had faith in me and so did you Daisy, thanks to the both of you I was able to open up and learn how to be sociable.”
“I love you bestie,” Daisy said.
“I love you too Daisy Lou.”
“It was easy to like you Ruby, you were always so nice and eager to help out with the gym.”
The girls were downstairs watching TV on Ruby’s state-of-the-art television set when their dinner arrived.
“What do I owe?”
Daisy asked as she reached for her wallet.
“My treat Daisy.”
The girls watched an old British movie and were quite entertained as they ate their dinners and talked about Daisy’s overseas trip.
“Thank you so much Daisy for all the presents you brought back for me, it was way too kind of you.”
“Anything for my best friend Ruby.” Daisy replied.
“What do you know about your opponent Devlin Knight?”
“He’s an excellent champion and I know I can beat him, he’s going to make mistakes like a rookie because he doesn’t know how to compete against my ring style.”
When they were finished eating, and the dishes were put in the dishwasher, Daisy looked out to the deck and giggled.
“What is it?” Ruby asked.
“Let’s go skinny dipping in your hot tub!”
“Okay! Only with you would I do this Daisy.””
Daisy nodded her head and
Ruby went and grabbed two towels from the upstairs closet and she found Daisy already naked and in the hot tub. Ruby stood with her towel around her and debated for a long moment before saying,
“ Here I come!”
Ruby said as she took off her towel, dashed out onto the deck, climbed into the tub and sunk up to her neck.
“Omg this feels so good!” Daisy said as she moved over to sit beside Ruby who had sunk up to her chin.
“Did I tell you that Devlin is afraid of clowns too?”
Ruby asked Daisy and Daisy shook her head no and then her eyes lit up with devious mischief.
“You should wear a big red clown nose when you do your promo. See if you can freak him out a little bit!”
“Daisy my dear, that is a wonderful idea! I’ll be right back, we can shoot the promo right here in the tub.”
Ruby climbed out of the tub, wrapped her towel around herself and hurried back into the house and upstairs and searched through several of her drawers and finally found the clown nose in the last drawer. Ruby grabbed the nose and smiled as she looked in her dresser mirror. The red nose had been part of a costume Ruby had made a few years ago for a costume party and had forgotten all about it.
“Perfect!”
Walking back downstairs, Handsome followed her outside and looked at her with wide eyes having never seen Mommy wearing a clown nose before! He got down low and barked a few times before he grabbed the edge of her towel and took off with it in his mouth.
“Handsome! Get your ass back here before I kick it!”
called out to the dog who had disappeared into the house with his prize. Ruby rolled her eyes as she climbed back into the tub with Daisy.
“Did you find it?”
“You bet I did! Turn your phone on, are you ready?”
Daisy gave the thumbs up to Ruby who started to speak, the water covered most of her breasts and she felt excited about this.
“Hi Devlin, I’m sure you hear it a lot and I may be just another opponent to you but this match means the world to me. I’ve been a wrestling fan my entire life, the fact that I am a rookie and am getting an IC title shot blows my mind. You had better bring your A-game Devlin Knight because I am gunning for that belt and it will be mine! Oh, did you notice my red nose? I wore it just for you. I know how much you love clowns, now don’t confuse me with a clown because I am far from it. When there is something I want, I go after it. I’m going to test you physically and I’m going to test your resolve and we will see in the end who wants to be champion more!”
“And we are clear! That was great Ruby!”
Daisy said as she uploaded everything to the boards and then set her camera down on her dry towel so it would not get wet.
“I am so nervous about this Daisy!”
“You’ve got this Ruby! Dad and I have faith in you,”
Daisy replied as she hugged her best friend.
