Tristan entered the office of John Cable at the New Breed Foundation to find John with his back toward the door on the other side of his desk as he was looking out the window upon downtown Jacksonville. Tristan closes the door behind him as John turns around and stares across the room at his former tag team partner and best friend before motioning for Tristan to have a seat.
TRISTAN SLATER- “I’m good standing.”
JOHN CABLE- “Suit yourself.”
John takes a seat at his desk.
JOHN CABLE- “So finally you’re ready?”
TRISTAN SLATER- “I wouldn’t say I’m ready for this conversation more than it needs to happen.”
JOHN CABLE- “I mean, I’ve been trying to have it for months but you seem to have better things to do with your time, sooooooo.”
The response from Cable draws a smirk from Tristan.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Well, maybe you needed to learn that not everyone jumps when you snap your fingers, and truthfully I’m more upset with you over this entire issue than I am Mac.”
JOHN CABLE- “Of course you are.”
Sheer sarcasm escapes the lips of Cable.
TRISTAN SLATER- “You knew better than invoking my name, and you did it because you didn’t think I was watching. Both of you knew better, you both tried to use me as a pawn in a personal pissing contest.
John interjects.
JOHN CABLE- “Wait a minute, that’s not entirely true. I didn’t go out of my way to call your name; that was all Mac. I just suggested to him that if push came to shove you’d have my back over his, but it was Bane who threw your name into things.”
TRISTAN SLATER- “Hence why I say that you both knew better.”
JOHN CABLE- “Don’t you think this is kind of petty?”
TRISTAN SLATER- “Is it though? Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t we agree that we wouldn’t compete in the same places because we nearly killed each other the last time it happened?”
JOHN CABLE- “That sounds about right.”
TRISTAN SLATER- “I didn’t expect Mac to know any better but I did expect you too, and since everyone seems to know what I’m going to do if it came to making choices… What am I doing to do, John? I mean, from where I’m sitting you seem to think that you’re the big dog that runs the WGWF yard.”
Let’s be fair of anyone on the roster there is but one person who has more accolades than anyone else and who has tasted more success. Me. I’ve made my intentions pretty freaking clear since I returned to the WGWF that my attention, my drive, my sole focus is attaining the one piece of hardware that has eluded me.
The WGWF Intercontinental Championship.
When you’ve been the WGWF World Heavyweight Champion three or four times over, when you’ve conquered the Television Title scene, and when you dominate the Tag Team field it’s hard to keep yourself motivated unless something like this falls into my lap. Five other pieces of talent… five worthy challengers who have all shown themselves as such by just making it to the point that they can step inside the Elimination Chamber. I suppose this is the time where I break you all down individually but the truth is you’re not different to me… all of you are standing in my way, all of you want to be the person that leaves with their arm raised in the air with the spoils of being the new WGWF Intercontinental Champion.
I don’t need to build you up.
You’re already built.
I don’t need to tear you down.
It will be too easy.
Essentially the five of you are one to me.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Who is the big dog now?”
JOHN CABLE- “Well this isn’t how I expected this to go. I was hoping that I could apologize for anything that said or did, but you are coming with a different kind of energy that I’m not so sure I appreciate.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Oh lord, is this where I’m asked to leave because I’ve offended the big bad wolf?”
JOHN CABLE- “I’m not sure, do you want to see this big bad wolf start huffing and puffing?”
TRISTAN SLATER- “Nah you can save all that hot air for someone else. I just wanted to come by and let you know face to face, man to man that I meant every word I’ve said since I’ve been back and I’m going to reiterate it here and now. If you stand in my way of what I’m going to accomplish at any point I am going to put you down. That’s not just a John Cable thing, that’s an everyone thing.”
The Intercontinental Championship is just what I am looking for now. Smash has all kinda of Championship that has never been around the waist, and while they might be appealing my eyes are locked on titles that matter on the show that outdraw Smash nearly two to one on an every-show basis. First Dance isn’t going to be an exception especially when you kick things off with this caliber of a match. We all know who is entering in first; the only man that’s already lost to two of us.
I want in second.
Some call it suicide.
I call it proving that I’m the best of the best when it comes to the rest of you. What better way to prove that than by being in the ring at the opening bell and there for the closing bell? I’ll put myself through more pain and punishment, I will bleed and pay the price for what it’s going to mean to hold that shiny toy up in the air while completing the only goal that’s left for me to attain on the Brawl brand.
JOHN CABLE- “I’m sorry you feel that way, I would have thought that considering everything that we’ve gone through you’d be a little more open, especially over a misunderstanding.”
TRISTAN SLATER- “I’m not so sure about that because I don’t think you thought I would show the fuck up. I’ve been watching you since the WGWF relaunch and when I tell you that you come across as a pompous, arrogant little shit who thinks everything revolves around him. I hate to be the bearer of bad news brother but the world doesn’t revolve around John, and if you were half as good as you want everyone to believe you might be carrying Championship gold versus constantly chasing it. I’m telling you this because you’re better than that, and you know it.”
Tristan continues as he looks down at John who is showing signs of restraint.
TRISTAN SLATER- “I don’t know what happened to you, but I suggest you do some soul searching because this John Cable isn’t going to find the levels of success he thinks he’s owed, and I’ll tell you this one more time. Get in my way, I will embarrass you.”
John slides his chair away from his desk and stands.
JOHN CABLE- “I think I’ve heard about enough of this.”
TRISTAN SLATER- “No worries hoss. I’ll leave you be.”
Tristan turns his back on John and makes his way back out of John’s office closing the door behind him. Tristan walks past John’s secretary and to the elevator where he hits the down button. The doors open and Tristan steps on where he’s met by two guards.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Let me guess, escorting me out?”
“Yes sir.”
Tristan snickers under his breath before softly stating.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Typical.”
Speaking of typical, I’d imagine most of your words toward me will be filled with empty promises. I’m sure you’ll try to dig deep into my lengthy history and try to throw random babble in my face. By all means, go right ahead. Go ahead and pretend that anything I might have done in the past means a damn thing about what we are going to be doing now. That’s one thing that has bothered me with some of you- you lean heavily into the past like it dictates the present or the future. I don’t care about your past, I could care less about your failures or successes because it ultimately means squat. All of us are stepping inside the Chamber, and all of us are putting our careers on the line because one mishap, one wrong landing could end it all. A great deal of luck is going to accompany the winner of this party, let’s not pretend skill plays into it at all over being in the right place at the right time to score an elimination. One of us has a huge advantage, but even that advantage is easy to overcome. One of us has already been beaten by two people in this chamber so it’s fairly safe to say that they are climbing uphill. Another one of us is far too busy trying to be the poster boy of professional wrestling to give this his undivided attention; perhaps that’s why he took the L on Brawl heading into First Dance. One of us has a fascination with Damion and an old veteran who killed his career with drugs and alcohol, and the last one probably can’t even tell us which version of himself he is because he’s lost in his own fucking head.
… then there’s me.
I’m the guy that you should be fearing.
I’m the guy who truly has nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I tend to turn it up when the lights are on bright and it’s all on the line as you will all soon witness firsthand. I don’t tend to crumble under pressure, I rise through it regardless of the circumstances. I’m as unpredictable as the environment we are all stepping in, and I assure you all that I will have no problems in making a tough decision if it means my success or my failure. I have miles of chain, I have steel platforms, and I have pods all at my disposal to use as my instruments of destruction to shed the blood of anyone who steps to me. I don’t have to be well-liked, I don’t need to be popular, and I’m certainly not interested in anyone else's views or opinions of me. I’ve got bigger things to worry about.
The elevator doors opened once we reached the lobby. Tristan steps off the elevator with the two members of the Lock Down Crew; one on each side of Slater following close. Tristan glances toward Angel who makes eye contact and gives Tristan the shame, shame motion with her index fingers to which Tristan shrugs with both shoulders.
TRISTAN SLATER- “What can I say, I have a way with words.”
Tristan then asks with an elevated tone.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Any thoughts on that number? You know that we could have some fun.”
Tristan attempts to stop at the desk but he’s pushed slightly by one of the guards behind him which causes him to slowly spin around and eye down on the of the Lock Down Crew.
TRISTAN SLATER- “You must have a death wish. You get one of those, cupcake. You just used it. Now, I would suggest that you apologize before things get out of hand.”
There’s not a single response.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Okay, last chance.”
Tristan begins rolling up the sleeves on his shirt when John’s voice is heard calling out from the distance.
JOHN CABLE- “Leave him be.”
Upon hearing John’s command the two members of the Lock Down Crew slowly back away several feet while John steps forward toward Tristan.
JOHN CABLE- “I don’t want to end things like that, you and I have a history that no one else can match. I understand that I crossed a line, and instead of making excuses about it, pointing the finger of blame I’ll just own it. You’re right. I should have never brought your name up while bickering with Mac Bane.”
TRISTAN SLATER- “See, how freaking hard was that? Instead of making stupid excuses just own your shit and move the hell on with it. That’s all I ever wanted out of you. You’re better than that, and you know it.”
JOHN CABLE- “I know, why do you think I followed you down? You have valid points, and I acknowledge them. I’m sorry this got out of hand and that it bothered you to the core.”
John extends his hand out to Tristan.
JOHN CABLE- “Let’s move past it with the understanding that I know where you’re coming from and I won’t put you in that position again.”
TRISTAN SLATER- “See, even beasts can be wrong.”
Tristan extends his hand and shakes John’s.
JOHN CABLE- “We good?
TRISTAN SLATER- “Yeah, we’re good.”
Tristan releases John’s hand while glancing around his right shoulder at Angel.
TRISTAN SLATER- “If you’ll excuse me…’
Tristan walks around John and to the front desk as a smile comes across the face of Angel.
TRISTAN SLATER- “So… any thought about coming off that number?”
Tristan reaches into his back pocket, pulls out his cell phone, and slides it on the desktop. Angel laughs under her breath before taking Tristan’s phone and putting her number in it.
TRISTAN SLATER- “Free for dinner tonight, say… eightish?”
Tristan takes his phone and winks at Angel before turning around and walking back over toward John while stating.
TRISTAN SLATER- “And here I thought Jacksonville didn’t have anything to offer.”
Tristan shrugs.
TRISTAN SLATER- “I guess I was wrong.”
The scene draws to a close with Tristan walking out the front doors to the New Breed Foundation.
I can sum this all up for the rest of you easily. I’m the guy to beat. I’m the guy who carries more weight in this confrontation than any of you could fathom. I’ve elected to start second, I’m GOING to start second so that when it’s all said and done; win or lose I will set the tone, I will set the pace, and I will show all of you why I’m one of the reasons why any of you are under contract now. The rest of you should be proud that you’ve made it this far, you can pat yourselves on the back for taking this opportunity and putting yourselves in strong positioning moving into 2024.
