Ruby had just finished making up a birthday arrangement of flowers and candy when her cell phone vibrated on the table where she had been working.
“You’ve got a match at the one year anniversary show.” Was all it said.
“YES!”
Ruby exclaimed with excitement as she danced around her work area in the back of her flower shop.
“I’ve got a match…Hot damn I’ve got a match!”
“Everything okay back here?”
“Everything is just absolutely freaking wonderful Sara! I’ve got my first wrestling match at WGWF’s one year anniversary show in a few days. Oh my god I cannot believe it! I am so excited!”
Ruby replied as she hugged her best friend and business partner and nearly picked her up off the ground as she hugged her.
“I have to deliver this basket and then I have an appointment so I probably won’t see you until tomorrow.”
“Drive carefully!”
Sara said as she held the door open for Ruby so she could get out the door. Once Ruby was gone, Sarah went back to the wedding arrangement she had been working on. Sara was proud of Ruby, she had been working hard in between her time at the flower shop to train at a local wrestling school and now she had her first big chance to win a fight. Ruby stopped at a second red light after delivering her basket and on her way to her appointment with her therapist.
“I’m sorry I’m late!” She said as she stepped into Dr. Joe’s office and took a seat across from where he was sitting.
“Not a problem Ruby. So what do you feel like discussing today?”
“I have my first wrestling match in WGWF in a few days! I am so excited and I cannot believe this is finally happening!”
And then her face fell for a moment as she remembered something that disappointed her.
“I wanted to call my mom and dad to tell them but they’re still not taking my calls. They won’t even answer my emails Dr. Joe…I have this awesome news that I want to share with them because they are my parents but they won’t speak to me…”
Ruby reached for a couple of kleenex and dabbed at her eyes as she looked at her therapist writing stuff down.
“Well it’s great news that you finally have your first match Ruby! You should be very proud of yourself for what you have accomplished in the last year…Not a lot of people could have done the amount of work you’ve had to do with your flower shop and taking wrestling classes on the side. I’m quite proud of your Ruby.”
Dr. Joe and Ruby spent almost the entire hour talking about her upcoming match and how things were going at her flower shop. When their time was over, Ruby scheduled another appointment with the secretary and then headed home. She texted Sara that she was home safely and that she was going to go for a run around the block a couple of times. Padding upstairs to her bedroom, Ruby changed into a pair of grey leggings, a light blue colored tank top and a pair of sneakers. Grabbing her ipod from the bedside table, Ruby picked a playlist and hit play as she locked the door and took off running.
She thought about her opponent as she ran, her feet hitting the ground at a pace that would impress most people.
((He’s five foot three and I am six foot two and I’m heavier than him. There’s no way this guy can put up much of a fight is there?))
Ruby wondered to herself as she rounded the corner starting the second part of her run around the block. By the time she got back home she was drenched in sweat, heading upstairs to her ensuite bathroom she had a nice long relaxing shower. Wrapping her hair up in a towel she slipped into a robe and tied it around herself as she walked back into her bedroom. She brushed out her hair and then pulled it back into a ponytail and got dressed in a pair of jean cut off shorts and a tank top. Padding back down to the kitchen she grabbed her cell phone and placed an order for dinner to her favorite chinese restaurant.
“I shouldn’t be eating this before a match but, who cares tonight!” Ruby said to her empty house as she sat down at the kitchen table and dialed her mom and dad’s phone number.
“Your number cannot be connected, please call your local phone service provider.”
Ruby ended the attempt to call her parents and felt like pitching her cell phone into the garbage can. Dr. Joe was trying to help her come to terms with the fact that her parents cut her out of their life. She buried her face in her hands at the table and sniffled for a few minutes before she reached for some kleenex and wiped her eyes and stood up.
“If they don’t want me then I guess I don’t need them…” She said out loud to nobody in particular.
She bent over to pick up her purse from the floor and retrieved her debit card and waited outside on the front door step for the delivery.
“Miss Ruby! Tis always good to see you,”
The driver said with a smile as he handed her the food and she paid. Heading back into the house, she dished up some chicken low mein, some fried rice, and some sweet and sour chicken balls with red sauce on them and grabbed a bottle of pepsi and headed outside to eat on her back deck. Sitting down on the swing, Ruby contemplated the beginning of her wrestling career. What would this mean for the flower shop? Would she have to hire more people to help out while she was not around? The flower shop was her first priority and she needed to talk to her uncle about that.
“I’ll try calling him before I go to bed.”
Her plate and her bottle were both long empty by the time she headed back inside to put the rest of the food away, Ruby then sat down on the couch to watch some mindless television before going to bed. After a couple of repeat episodes of The Big Bang Theory, Ruby decided to call her uncle to talk to him about a few things she was concerned about. The conversation turned into an hour long phone call that ended with tears in Ruby’s eyes about how well her uncle addressed her concerns about the flower shop. By the time she crawled into bed, Ruby was beyond tired and more than ready for bed. As she started to drift off Ruby wished her parents would come to their senses but in her heart she knew that was not likely to happen.
