“Dalton can you pass me the wrench please?” Emily asked as she stuck her arm out from underneath the desk that would double as part of her set for her twitch live stream. Swayze and Dalton were spending the day helping Emily set up some of her sound equipment and computers while a friend of Buster’s from the bar worked on building a sound stage for her in the basement. “I come bearing lunch,” Buster’s dad said as he came downstairs holding up three bags full of fast food and two bottles of rootbeer and two bottles of Pepsi. “Thanks Pops! I’m starving,” Emily replied as she slid out from under the desk and stood up. “Let's go eat on the deck, come on Scooter!” Swayze said as he headed upstairs with the drinks he had taken from his grandfather.
Scooter curled up in front of the boys as they sat in their favorite chairs and ate hoping that one of them might drop him a little morsel of food! “I see that look Scooter James!” Emily said as she pointed at Scooter and hung his head as he barked once at Emily. The boys had been developing a bond with Scooter and it made Emily very happy to see. “We saw online you have a match for WGWF,” Dalton said as he took a bite of his submarine sandwich. “That I do indeed, I’m teaming up with someone I’m not too familiar with against Cassette Collective,” Swayze rolled his eyes at the name as Dalton spoke up. “What kind of name is Cassette Collective?” “Probably 80’s related, you three wouldn’t understand,” Pops said with a sly smile. “Hey I listen to 80’s music!” Emily said as she rolled her eyes. “Sure you do Miss Emily, we’ve all seen your playlists!”
The four of them bantered back and forth for a while until everyone was finished eating. “Thanks Pops for getting lunch for us,” Emily said as she gave Buster’s dad a hug. “No problem Emily, if you guys need me I’ll be over in my garage.”
“Miss Emily, can we talk with you for a moment?” Swayze asked Emily as he looked at his older brother for a moment who nodded his head.
“Of course Swayze, you boys can talk to me about anything!” Emily replied as she sat back down on the swing. “Dalton and I have talked about this a lot lately and it’s something that’s been weighing heavily on our minds,” Swayze said. Emily crossed her legs and listened intently at what the boys had to say, she hoped everything was alright.
“What’s on your mind?” Emily asked as she folded her hands in her lap. “We call you Miss Emily as a sign of respect and because we care about you,” Dalton said as he looked at his younger brother and then to Emily. “What we want to know is…Would you be okay with us calling you Ma instead of Miss Emily?” “We’ve thought a lot about it and we don’t want to be disrespectful to our mom in calling you mom too but we feel like Miss Emily is too formal. We are all family now,” Dalton said.
Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes. “Oh boys I’m very touched. I can only imagine how this must have been weighing on your minds. Have you talked with your dad about this?”
“Not yet, we were going to wait until he got home this afternoon from the bar to talk to him about it. The two of us wanted to talk to you first, make sure you were okay with it too” “You’re more than a stepmom to us,” Dalton said as he fidgetted with his hands. “Oh boys you’re going to make me cry again. Thank you both so much, I’ve come to love you both as if you were my own boys and I hope that the four of us can grow as a family and continue to become close,” Emily said as she wiped away her wet cheeks and smiled at the boys. “Do you still need our help setting up your desk?” Swayze asked as he smiled at Emily and in that moment he reminded her so much of Buster, both boys did in their own ways. “I think I can handle the rest, the carpenter should be here another couple of hours and will be back tomorrow. If the two of you could go and check on the miniature horses and make sure they have food and water please,” Emily replied. “Okay, ma!” Swayze said as the two boys headed out to the barn.
Emily ran a hand through her blond hair and pulled it back into a ponytail and then pulled her Samsung Galaxy flip phone out of her pocket and called her grandmother to tell her about what had just happened.
“Oh Grammie! This means the world to me, those boys mean the world to me. I cannot believe that they want to call me Ma instead of Miss Emily!” Emily gushed as she uncrossed her legs and swung back and forth in the porch swing. Once the boys had checked on the horses and made sure they were fed and watered, they grabbed their fishing rods and went to the pond with Scooter. Emily talked with her grandmother for half an hour before heading back downstairs to set things up for her sound stage. “Thanks for all your help Ace, see you tomorrow?” Emily asked as the older man finished up for the day. “First thing tomorrow morning!”
Emily got underneath her desk to hook up some of the wires for her microphone and her computer, she heard the boys come into the house with Scooter and several minutes later she could smell fish being cooked. ((Must have been a good haul)) She thought to herself as she dusted her knees off and shut off the lights downstairs and headed up to the kitchen. She stood quietly watching as Dalton and Swayze moved about the kitchen much like their dad would, Dalton was looking after the fish and Swayze was taking care of the rice and veggies. “Wow boys! Everything smells so good.” “Thanks Ma!” Both boys said as they hugged Emily.
Dalton was setting the table when the house phone rang, Emily reached for it and smiled when she saw Buster’s cell number. “Hey William! Yup, the boys took care of dinner. We are just sitting down now and I already sat a plate aside for you in the fridge.” “Excellent! I will be home in about forty five minutes.” The three of them were still sitting around the kitchen table when Buster came through the door. “Hey dad!” The boys said from the table where they were playing gin rummy and Emily was kicking their collective asses. Buster hugged both of his sons and then hugged Emily and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Take over for me William please? I’ll heat up your dinner for you,” Emily offered as she grabbed the plate from the fridge and popped it into the microwave. Sitting the plate down in front of Buster, Emily excused herself. “I’m going upstairs to dig up some dirt on Casette Collective!” She said with an evil laugh.
“How was your day boys?” Buster asked as he dug into his plate. “This is good, did you two make this yourselves?” “We went fishing in the pond earlier this afternoon and caught six fish between us. Dad, we know you’ve had a long day but there is something that Dalton and I would really like to talk to you about.” “Of course Swayze, what’s up?” Buster asked as he wiped his mouth and looked at his sons. The boys told Buster about their earlier conversation with Emily and how she reacted to their question.
“I’m so proud of the two of you. I’m sure Emily was honored,” he replied. “She cried dad!” Swayze said. “We explained to her how we felt and told her that we would like to call her Ma and she said that she would love whatever we chose to call her. Mom will always be our mom but Emily has become our Ma,” Dalton replied. When Buster headed upstairs for the night, Emily was asleep in their bed with her laptop across her lap. “Wake up gorgeous,” Buster whispered as he kissed the top of her head. “I’m awake! Time to work out!” She said. “It’s time for bed Emily, not time to go running.” Emily watched as Buster got ready for bed and then pushed back the covers and crawled in. Emily put her laptop on her bedside table and snuggled in close to Buster. “Buster? Today was one of the best days ever,” she said with a yawn as he reached to turn off the light. “Good Emily, I’m happy.”
