(The following took place on the Brawl Pre-Show this evening, but may have occurred during a commercial break…)
The lights in the arena go out and bells begin to toll. The big screen at the top of the ramp comes to life and a shaded black and white image of a castle comes into view…
VOICE: “The root of the Kingdom is in the State. The root of the State is in the Family. The root of the Family is in the person of its head…”
The imagery flashes from the castle to a silhouetted figure and back again several times…
VOICE: “The rich man had to admire the dishonest Rascal for being so shrewd…”
The silhouette stands tall, arms raised then it brings one down and seemingly points towards the audience in the arena. The image shifts again to a field, a single solitary flower and a bumblebee hovering above the flower.
VOICE: “And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light…”
The image changes once more to what appears to be some kind of country club, a pile of books lay upon a table and while reading the spines we see “Catcher in the Rye” by J. D. Salinger, “The Destructors” by Graham Greene and “The Law of One” by Ra.
VOICE: “My seat has been the seat of Kings, and I will have no Rascal to succeed me… When a man makes up his mind to become a Rascal, he should examine himself closely and see if he isn't better constructed for a fool…”
Suddenly the screen goes black and the melancholic tune of Gary Jules and Michael Andrews' rendition of “Mad World” begins to play over the speaker system… The screen begins to oscillate between scenes, recorded on what appears to be an old-school video camera.
A little boy of around three years old running around the backyard of a house, playing on a swing set with a man wearing glasses and holding a pipe in his hand.
The same young boy on a beach in trunks, making a sandcastle… A slim, beautiful woman with a perm and wearing a bikini helping him.
VOICE: “I knew nothing but shadows and I thought them to be real… Once upon a time, there was a girl and the girl had a shadow…”
Another scene this time the boy is older, seems to be potentially in school and he’s laughing and joking with a girl. Suddenly the scene shifts to somewhere dark, with the outline of a man sitting there… Then just as quickly back to the boy…
VOICE: “We’ve all got tricks up our sleeves… Do you wanna see a trick?”
Another shift to the outline of someone in the dark, they seem to be getting closer to the screen. Oscillation in the image again and we now see “The Rascal King” Jonathan Bacchus leaving what appears to be a gym, carrying a gym bag and walking down the street.
VOICE: “You’re not the only overly dramatic person here, brethren… The trouble is you’ll open up way too easily, but you’ll never be able to break this down…”
The camera cuts back to the outline in the dark that seems to shudder right up to the camera before settling on the eyes of Fred Debonair.
FRED DEBONAIR: “FOR I AM THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY…”
The scene blacks out completely and slowly the house lights come back on as the crowd boo between murmuring amongst themselves...
