All I've ever been able to see since my birthing is darkness. Nothing more and nothing less.
The world of the living sees so many things. They see the Sun rise every morning to great them. They watch as the birds fly without thinking of the time. They hold each other close and tell them everything will be okay. The human spirit.
Disgusting.
I've seen my handful of the human spirit and it always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Dusk says they are incompetent beings who will eventually fall, then they are ours. When they fall, they are ours.
"Why must we wait until they fall?" I ask Dusk with a fiendish grin. He has always been by my side since my birthing. He says he was around for the birthing of thought. He is an old man. He is a dark individual that resembles what humans call a rabbit. He licks the blood off his black claws as he speaks to me.
"We must always wait, Shade, that's what our existence is. Purgatory." His tongue is festered with callouses and his entire face resembles the skull of a human being. His teeth are covered in grime and blood. A fresh kill had been made earlier in the day. A child's spirit lost in Purgatory today. Nothing better than the will of children.
I am sitting on a throne made of the bones of the deceased. The bones rattle constantly and the skulls scream in pain. They are the eternal damned. They're screams go unnoticed between Dusk and I. They bring us much joy just as music brings joy to the humans. My laughter resounds above it all and Dusk stops his gluttony.
"Our existence is to feast upon the will of man. Don't you understand my old friend? We are the dealers of the Lord of Death. We are the ones who keep the human spirit at bay."
Dusk gives me a quizzical look. He does not understand my meaning, his old age has gotten to him. Changing the old ways has never been his strong suit. He picks at his teeth as he speaks, "The human spirit is a delicious meal given to us by our Lord. It is nothing like you speak. We are his children and he feeds us. Our existence to do what the Lord of Death commands. You are too young and hopeful."
I scoff at his denial. The screaming skulls blast through my ears and I lick my lips thinking of the next meal. Humans are delicious, that is one thing Dusk and I can agree on. I gaze at our blood red moon with all it's wonder.
"There are times here that I look up at our moon. It bleeds as we spill blood. It always stays red, it never changes. The skulls never stop screaming and the bones continue to rattle. Our only company is one another and nothing more," I say with much distaste over my current living conditions, "Things have gotten stale, Dusk."
He gazes at the moon for a moment. A deep growl is heard from within.
"HOW I HATE THAT MOON."
My gaze is averted and turned to Dusk. His claws have extended and his growl deepens. The demon who has been here longer than I have. He was alone for so long. He hates it more than I do.
Purgatory is a barren wasteland with dying trees all around. Skulls and bones litter the area, pools of blood with corpses attempting to escape but cannot pull themselves through the blood that resembles quicksand. Souls linger in hidden places as they fear myself and Dusk. We feast upon them to give ourselves more power. The more we eat, the stronger we become and the better our graces are the Lord of Death. It controls this land and sends those souls who have been damned here. The worst are sent to the Inferno, but we get the most delicious. You never realize how delicious a babies unwashed soul can be until you've have one between your teeth. The place is littered with their bodies.
"What do you plan to do?"
Dusk growls deeply with much anger.
"Leave this place."
The moon has done what I could not. It has convinced my mentor to abandon his home. It is the gateway between the living and the dead. I've had long thoughts about leaving this place, but never have I voiced them. Today is a different day and it only took my words and the moon to send him into a frenzy. I believe Dusk always wanted a good excuse to leave. He found that in me. I look on in much anticipation. My blood boils with excitement. The skulls scream in agony, my hollow heart races throughout my body. The bones are rattling worse than before as I stand from my throne. Dusk is in position. I glance up at the blood red moon, I swear it has smiled back at me. My hands tighten into fists as I prepare for the ascension. Dusk has begun smiling as we share one final glance between the two of us.
"Are you ready, Shade?"
"Do it, Dusk!"
We both crouch down and then with all of our energy ascend to the moon with a giant leap. The dark air pushes past me at an alarming rate. Souls attempt to grab us as we ascend, but they have no power over us. We are getting closer to the moon and with our last breathes in Purgatory we scream our words.
"ALL MEN MUST DIE!!!"
With fists and claws we both crash through the bloodied moon. It crumbles beneath us as we are greeted with a familiar face. Darkness. Nothing more and nothing less.
