(Seven years ago)
Jack gathered everyone in the wrestling ring and had them all sit in a circle and joined them.
“The next thing I want to talk to you guys about is how to handle a loss. Does it suck? You bet it does but that’s what happens when you wrestle. I can teach you kids everything I can but you also need to learn dignity with loss. Now I am not saying you have to shake hands afterward or anything like that but to give a sign of acknowledgement that the person just so happened to be better than you this time around means they worked hard. Work harder and improve on your skills and you could beat them the next time around. Even if you don’t, it’s all about how you play the game, with dignity and respect. Losing does not make you any less of a wrestler, Understand?”
Ruby raised her hand to ask a question.
“Yes, Ruby?” Jack asked her.
“What do you do if you’re really angry about losing a match?”
“Well, that can be a tough one to answer but let me try anyway ok? Like I said, it is okay to be angry about losing but it’s not okay to act out on those feelings. Find something else to do, for example, I love to go swimming. That helps to soothe me, find something and turn it into a hobby or someone like a friend that you can spend time with Now do ten laps around the gym and we shall call it a day!”
(Present day)
Ruby was sitting on the couch waiting for Daisy to get home so they could work out. Handsome as usual had his head in her lap and was lying on his side with his front paws hanging off the couch.
“You mama's boy Handsome?”
“WOOF!” Handsome replied.
Ruby rubbed his belly and kissed the top of his head.
“Well, mama loves you with all her heart, because you are just the best dog around!”
It was a beautiful summer day and Ruby had all the windows open as well as her front and back doors. Ruby decided to get up from the couch and make herself a protein shake before Daisy got home with the groceries.
“Hey, Daisy Lou! Care for a protein shake?”
Ruby asked as she took a sip of her fruit shake and protein powder.
“No thanks, I stopped at Booster Juice on the way home and I picked up something.”
Daisy and Ruby headed outside to bring in the groceries and then decided they would go outside in the front yard and do some yoga. Daisy grabbed a blanket while Ruby grabbed a radio and they set up in front of Ruby’s house underneath the shade of some trees.
“And downward dog,” Ruby called out, and the next thing both girls knew they had a hundred-and-thirty-five-pound Rottweiler in between them trying to do yoga with them. Ruby and Daisy fell over laughing at Handsome’s antics. When Handsome grew bored of what Ruby and Daisy were doing, he walked in a circle twice and curled up in between the two of them, and gave a big yawn as he rolled over onto his side.
“Oh, to be a dog.”
Ruby said as she rolled over onto her stomach. Daisy rolled over too and looked at her best friend.
“What can I do to help Ruby? You name it, I’ll do it!”
“I had that match won against Devlin Knight! Losing to a sleeper hold just pisses me off and makes me feel like I let down anyone that has ever cheered for me”
“Do you remember that talk that dad gave us about losing with dignity and respect?”
“I remember…” She replied fondly.
“Take dad’s words to heart then Ruby, losing sucks believe me I know but think of it this way though okay? You took Devlin to his limit and that is something to be proud of and you really should be.”
“You’re right I know that Daisy but on the plus side this is my first ppv with the WGWF and thousands of people will be watching. I wonder…”
“You wonder what Ruby?”
“If my dad will be watching…”
“I bet he’ll be there Ruby. Why don’t you just tell him the truth?”
Daisy asked as she pulled both of her knees up against her chest.
“Because I am afraid he won’t want anything to do with me.”
“ Why wouldn’t he be Ruby? You have such fond memories of him as a young child and he seems like a wonderful dad.”
“What if he doesn’t believe me when I tell him?”
“DNA test if he’s willing,” Daisy replied matter of factly.
“Good point.”
“What do you have to lose Ruby?”
“I’ve already lost almost everything, Daisy. This tenuous connection I have to my dad feels like all I have left and I don’t want to lose that too”
“Come on Ruby, you have to have faith.”
Ruby sat up and ran her hands through her hair and heaved a frustrated sigh. Handsome, sensing that something was wrong with Mommy, sat up and put his head in her lap and smiled up at her.
“I’m sorry if I upset you, Ruby,”
Daisy said as she wrapped an arm around Ruby’s shoulders. Ruby heaved a sigh and took comfort in the smell of Daisy’s shampoo and she snuggled in close with her best friend.
“Why don’t we start dinner?”
“I know you just bought groceries but I don’t feel like cooking. Why don’t we order Chinese?”
Ruby asked as she sat on the kitchen counter.
“Hey if that’s what you want then it is fine by me,”
Daisy replied as she stood between Ruby’s knees and hugged her best friend tightly.
“You’re the best Daisy,”
Ruby said as she kissed Daisy’s forehead.
They played cards until the food arrived and were starving when it finally did. Ruby paid for the meal while Daisy fed Handsome and then she set the table.
“Smells wonderful as usual!”
Daisy watched as Ruby pulled out each dish and groaned.
“Could you go any slower?
“Patience is a virtue Daisy,” Ruby snickered,
“Patience may be a virtue, little Miss Fortune Cookie, but I’m hungry now!” Daisy replied.
The two of them laughed and dished up their plates. Both women nodded their heads in agreement at how good the food was. When they were finished, Daisy loaded the dishwasher and Ruby put the rest of the food away.
“You feel like going for a walk Daisy?”
“Good idea Ruby, come on Handsome!”
Daisy replied as she called for the dog and attached his leash to his harness. Once they were outside, Ruby took Handsome’s leash and they started off on a relatively short walk.
“So how do you feel about your triple threat match?”
“I’m the underdog yet again in this match. Both of my opponents Latoya and Kat have held titles in other feds. I’ve got a lot to prove but really so does Kat, she’s coming back to active competition after an absence and Latoya and I are all keyed up and ready to go. Kat is the more experienced of the two. I’ve heard some good things about her and good things about Latoya. Latoya seems like someone I could be friends with. Where is Kat? I think she’d rather try and kick my ass than be my friend. Kat has some years on her that I don’t and I think that could go in my favor. I honestly think Latoya is the wild card here. To pick a winner out of the three of us of course I’d like to pick myself but it’s selfish to pick myself. If I were a betting woman and I’ve been known to bet a time or two, I’d have to go with Kat or myself. Maybe I am a little selfish after all.”
“There is nothing wrong with being selfish!” Daisy replied.
The two girls continued to chat as they walked to the base of the hills and then turned back around and headed back to the house.
“In all honesty Daisy it could go one of three ways and I am going to have to pull out all the stops if I want to win this match and boy do I wanna win this match!”
The girls sat on the porch swing and continued to talk about the match for a while as the sun began to set and then they headed back inside.
When Ruby was getting ready for bed she had an idea and she snickered. For the last couple of years Daisy and Ruby had been having a friendly game of one-upmanship in the form of sending each other risque photos practically naked but not fully naked. Ruby and Daisy trusted each other not to share the photos with anyone but them. Ruby was up the next morning before Daisy was and set up her photoshoot with her topless and holding to coffee cups in front of her breasts and her legs crossed on the kitchen table with her stiletto heels on.
The next morning found Ruby at Jack’s gym and Daisy at home. Daisy giggled as she got out of the shower and wrapped a towel around herself and then grabbed a stuffed Grumpy Kitty and headed out to her room. Brushing out her long red hair, Daisy set up her camera on a tripod and then unwrapped the towel and moved her hair until it barely covered her breasts and then set the timer on her phone for an automatic picture take and quickly got back on the bed and sat Grumpy Cat between her legs.
“Yes! Let's see you top this one Ruby Rioux!” Daisy said out loud as she checked out the photo and then sent it to Ruby.
“So what can I do for you today Ruby?”
Jack asked as he hugged his adopted daughter and kissed her forehead.
“Just wanted to stop in and see if you wanted to go for lunch,”
Ruby replied as she hugged Jack back just as tightly and then her phone beeped.
“Just let me check that Jack.”
Ruby opened the picture and her mouth hit the floor but she covered it up well so that Jack just caught a look of Ruby’s face.
“Something wrong?”
((Lets see you do better! Hashtag sorry not sorry)) Ruby read the words that went with the picture to herself and then quickly stuffed her phone back in her purse.
“Oh just Daisy sending me a dirty picture,” Ruby replied with a chuckle.
“Well give me about half an hour to finish up with the class for lunch. Why don’t you sit in on the class and watch?” Jack asked.
Ruby followed him into the gym and saw all the new faces doing their best to learn the craft.
She wondered how many of them would make it and how many wouldn’t come back tomorrow, It had taken a lot of bumps and bruises for Ruby to develop three of her most important rules.
Dignity
Respect
And always come back tomorrow.
Jack gathered everyone in the wrestling ring and had them all sit in a circle and joined them.
