-We begin with Addison Andrews and her father, Riley Andrews standing in a room at her fathers home in Chicago, Illinois. The room is adorned with memorabilia from both his wrestling career and acting career. On the wall is a poster of himself and Mike Angelo from over 20 years ago, hanging right next to it is a replica tag team championship from since long gone promotion. Addison is discussing the art of the long promo with her father, something she never had to worry about on the small stages of the wrestling world.-
Addison Andrews- “There’s no real good training for these. I’ve done the in ring stuff at the local shows. But like, I’ve never just talked at length about my opponent.”
Riley Andrews- “It gets easier over time. There’s also rules that we discussed in the past.”
Addison- “Size matters but don’t get overly wordy?”
Riley- “Don’t talk like you’re reading a college essay. Don’t be afraid of contractions. Avoiding those doesn’t make you any better. It just makes you annoying.”
Addison- “Got it.”
Riley- “You’re an Andrews, you’ll do fine.”
Addison- “I’m a lot more humble than you are though.”
Riley- -puts his arm around Addison’s shoulder- “Oh you are now, but soon kiddo, you’ll be an even better version of myself.”
-Riley walks over to the otherside of his office and overlooks a wall of DVDs and Blu-Rays.-
Riley- “This is one of the greatest tropes in entertainment.”
Addison- “What do you mean?”
Riley- “The student must take down the turned bad mentor! It’s a classic.” -Pulls out a title off the wall and holds it up.- “Training Day, Denzel gone bad, Ethan Hawke has to bring him in.”
Addison- “Never seen it.”
Riley- “What, how?”
Addison- -takes the film out of Riley’s hand and looks at the back.- “Well, for starters I was like one when this came out."
-Riley takes the movie out of her hand and puts it back on the shelf. He reaches for another one off the wall.-
Riley- “Batman Begins, spoiler alert, same thing.”
Addison- “I got your point. Maybe I could use this.”
-Addison looks over the wall.-
Riley- “Sure, there’s countless examples. Just let it all flow and you’ll be fine! I’m ready when you are. And honestly, I have to admit how excited I am for this. Technology has advanced so much in twenty years! Back in my day we recorded this shit with a camcorder or we dragged some poor hapless camera man around with us everywhere like we were a Kardashian. Now we just use phones! It’s amazing.”
Addison- “You’re really dating yourself right now.”
Riley- “Don’t make it not true.”
Addison- “Ok let’s do this. I think I’m ready to go.”
-Riley walks over and sets up the phone on a tripod. After a few moments they start recording.-
Addison- “Hello WGWF, if you don’t know who I am, let me introduce myself. I’m Addison Andrews, a second generation wrestler. Oh, and this is my father Riley Andrews. Who may or may not be a hanger on, but you may know him from.. ‘Hit’ TV shows or maybe even when he wrestled way back in the days of dial up internet.
-Riley looks at her and mouths an offended “hey” before letting her continue.-
Addison- “I come from the great Mike Angelo’s own wrestling school, where my uncle, and now soon to be opponent, taught me everything I know. I used that knowledge to tackle the wrestling feds here in my hometown of Chicago, Illinois and up in my dad’s old stomping ground, good ole Canada. And now, after doing all I could do there, I’m here in WGWF, to take the next step in my career. And to one day, over shadow everything this man standing next to me has done!”
Riley- “Once again, hey!”
Addison- “So, as luck would have it and as I said before, my first match in WGWF is a match against the very same man who trained me. It’s one of the oldest stories of all time, master vs. student. And just like Anakin Skywalker taking down Obi Wan Kenobi..”
Riley- -puts his hand up- “Actually, he underestimated the high ground, lost an arm and his legs.”
Addison- “Yeah… but eventually.”
Riley- “Right, yeah. Sorry, continue.”
Addison- “So just like..”
Riley- -puts his hand up again- “But you know, it sorta seemed like Obi-Wan let him win. The whole strike me down and I become stronger than you can possibly imagine thing.”
-Addison shoots Riley an annoyed look.-
Riley- “Your mom gives me that look a lot. I’ll shut up.”
-Addison shakes her head and continues.-
Addison- “Regardless, Mike, this is a story as old as time. And it always ends the same way. The student defeats the teacher.”
Riley- “Except for when Rocky beat Tommy Gunn in a street fight in Rocky five.”
-Addison again stares at Riley. Riley zips his mouth with his fingers and puts his hands up, acknowledging he’ll shut up.-
Addison- “I don’t want you to think that you can overlook me and this moment. You more than anyone know what I’m capable of. You got me to this point in my career, yet it seems like you do want to overlook me. You’re already far more concerned with dredging up an old beef with my father. What is this 2002?”
Riley- “And thank you for filling in the WGWF audience of just who I am and our history together. If I talked about being the better half of the Canadian Elite, I’d just come off as arrogant, but when you say it! Well, it’s just music to my ears. Mike, I’m not going to get into our past, this is shit that we’ve dealt with before and this time it’s not about me and you. You want to know why Addison is here? She proved herself on the same circuits that we did. And in the meantime, our dear old friend got in my ear. Wanted to see if I had one more run left in me. I had to decline, I’m done wrestling. But I sent some tapes of Addy here and the rest is history. And, hey just look at us now! Reliving our old greatest hits against each other. But it’s not about me and you and whatever reason you’re mad at me for this time. It’s about the new era, Mike. Not the era of some old relics that are trying way too hard to hang onto the past.”
Addison- “Don’t you dare try to take this moment away from me, Mike. You know just how hard I’ve worked to reach this spot in my career. You know how bad I want this. I’m sorry that it had to be against you. You’ve taught me everything I know but you’re also family. I hoped it’d be a long time before we ever had to face off. But I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt a little to see you treat someone you claim to be your prized pupil like this. To even be taken seriously by you. But fine, you don’t think I’m worthy of your time, great. Come Brawl, I’ll make you regret that decision and then once again, what you fear most will happen. Everything you’re trying to build, will be overshadowed by an Andrews. Love ya fam. See ya soon.”
-Addison winks at the camera as it slowly fades to black.-
